Q. How do I participate?
A. Sign up for an individual project, or contact me to express an interest in future projects.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. Project 1 will be free for participants.
Q. Will it always be free?
A. Nope, I'm afraid not. Project 1 is a pilot to see how well things work and to iron out problems. There may be further free projects as I develop and refine the system, but ultimately I'm going to need a contribution towards the camera/film/processing/postage costs.
Q. What happens if I don't like any of my photos?
A. It can happen to all of us. However, you might find that even though you don't like them, others would, so I'd always ask you to nominate at least one of your shots for the gallery.
Q. Who will do the processing?
A. For Project 1 I'll home process the film. For paid projects in the future I'll rely on my preferred analogue photography provider, Analogue Wonderland, in the first instance. There may be occasions when I turn to other labs for convenience or timing, but I won't develop the film myself for paid projects.
Q. What happens if I (or someone else) loses or breaks the camera, of if it gets lost in the mail?
A. There's not much anyone can do about that unfortunately. There's always the risk that a collaborative project could fail because of a mishap, and unfortunately we all have to share that risk. By signing up to a project you accept that risk, but hopefully we can all accept that accidents happen and move on without any feeling of resentment or loss.
Q. Do I have to give you or other participants my home address?
A. I'll need your home address for the licence agreement (see below), but I do not need to divulge that to any other person if you provide a different mailing address for the camera. Cameras can be sent to a work address or a Post Office Box of your choosing. As the camera is sent directly from one participant to the next, it will be necessary to provide a delivery address to a stranger, and so I would recommend you use a different address from your home address.
Q. When I've taken my photographs, what do I do with the camera?
A. I will provide you with an address to forward the camera to at your earliest convenience.
Q. Will I have to bear the costs of mailing the camera to the next participant?
A. Yes, and you should be aware that the next participant may be in a different country, or even continent to you. Please don't sign up if you are not prepared to bear the cost of one overseas mailing. Fortunately, the cameras are light and mailing costs should not be too high. I'll also try to minimise the number of overseas mailings in each project by choosing the order of participants carefully.
Q. What about copyright of my images?
A. By signing up to, and participating in a project, you agree to licence to me (or an entity run by me, if we get that far) the right to use your project photographs in the online galleries in this site, and also on social media to promote this site, the projects and the galleries. However, you retain ownership and all moral rights, and you will always be appropriately acknowledged as the photographer when images are displayed. The licence agreement is available here and I will require all participants to sign a copy (I'll send you a signed copy by email in advance of the start of the project for your counter-signature).
Q. What are your future plans for this site?
A. I'd like to run multiple projects with as many different participants around the world as possible. I'd like to use social media to draw attention to the projects and to promote the galleries to get the widest possible exposure for your photos in the projects. With so many fantastic analogue photographers out there I hope we get some truly great galleries, and maybe we can even move to physical exhibitions in the distant future...
